Applefest Float |
|
We have been kicking around the idea of entering an FBC Weston Float in the Applefest Parade for a couple of years now. Here is what we need: an open trailer, volunteers to help construct a vision for it, float riders, folks to walk with the float to hand out information about the church and our upcoming Outdoor Movie Night/Carnival, lots of candy donated, someone who would like to pull the trailer with a tractor or truck, etc. We will have a short planning/informational meeting following our Worship Service on Sunday, September 7th. If you would like to take part please plan on joining us then! |

Pastor's Pen |
Brothers & Sisters,
The above is a photo of a slice of a "Crab Apple Pie" and the recipe for it can be found here! You can give thanks to Rick Beall for sending this over. I do not endorse this recipe because I have no idea if it is actually any good! I know I used this pie as a negative sermon illustration but after I had a good laugh from Rick's text I got to thinking about it. This can be used in the positive sense as well.
The warning Jesus gives to the Pharisees here is to repent of their wicked ways and bear good fruit. In other words they can be redeemed. Perhaps, crab apples can serve as an illustration of what this takes. For a crab apple to be of any value or good it has to pass through the fire of the oven. So it is with us. We must be confronted with the flame of hell that is deserved because of our sin. We then see Jesus for who He is, repent, and place our faith in Him. Then, and only then, are we made good. I know the illustration of the crab apple pie breaks down a bit but I think you get the picture.
My encouragement for you this week is to remember that you were once a crab apple with seemingly no redeeming qualities but Jesus has given you His righteousness. Even a crab apple can (allegedly) be used for good when baked into a pie. It just takes a whole lot of sugar and fire! Paul writes to the Ephesians “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:8-10)
Go bear fruit!
