Brothers & Sisters, Pastor Daniel, Jake Maechler, & I had the privilege of attending a one day conference called "Feed My Sheep". The conference is intentionally simplistic. We gather around God's Word, singing, a meal, and fellowship with Pastors, church leaders, and members of likeminded churches. The day is meant to be an encouragement but also a reminder of the importance of the local church in carrying out the work God has called us to. Bonus: the conference is held at Wornall Road Baptist Church which is the flagship church that sparked a movement of revitalizing churches in North America led by Mark Clifton. We heard a message from Bob Flack of Riverbend Bible Church that reminded us that our posture matters when approaching the issues of our day. This served as a wonderful reminder that we are to “Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.” Erik Raymond shared a helpful reminder that lasting significance in life does not come from what we achieve but in Christ. He launched us into this point from Ecclesiastes 1. This was a good reminder that bodies, baptisms, and budgets, while worthy of celebration, are not the only metrics of God's work in the church. Lastly, Geoff Change shared 9 helpful encouragements from the life and Pastoral Ministry of Charles Spurgeon which tied a nice bow onto the day as these encouragements really affirmed much of what had already been shared! In many ways these encouragements were very affirming for us as they reflect what the Lord has been doing in our own church. Here they are; Prioritize the Preaching of the Word, Raise up Elders & Deacons, Maintain Your Walk with the Lord, Be Watchful Against Temptation, Guard Against the Fear of Man, Avoid Unnecessary Conflicts, Expect Suffering, Cultivate Real Relationship, & Don't Neglect Your Health. While these exhortations were aimed at Pastors and leaders they really are fitting for every Christian. My favorite quote of the day came from Spurgeon, "Don't fight the Lord's battles with the devil's weapons!" It was a great day of fellowship and we return this morning encouraged! Perhaps there is something in here that might bring encouragement to you as well. |
